William Baxter was a talented engineer and inventor. He invented an adjustable S wrench in 1855 patented in 1856. This wrench was for working on steam engines. He established the Baxter Wrench Company in 1869. He didn’t have a lot of time to invest in the wrench business. He devoted his time to the Baxter Steam engine. J Charlton was the first manufacturer followed by Greene Tweed. Patents were transferred J A Greene.
