F A Howard

F A Howard was an early manufacturer of spiral screwdrivers. Franklin Augustus Howard established the business in Belfast, Maine in 1876. His son, Will Russell, joined in 1895. His father turned the business over to him in 1896.

Important products included an adjustable miter cutter, proof press for printing, and at least two different versions of a spiral screwdriver.

Patents for the mitering machine were 57,325 and 81,373 issued 1866 and 1868. The George Washington Burgess proof press, patent number 173,792 was added in 1876. Other names associated with the patents are Isaac Allard Jr. and James W Jones.
